Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
