Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the nature of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
